Instead of asking them to answer with “yes” or “no,” Grant Boulanger gives his students a much broader range of responses– “of course,” “how nice,” “you don’t say,”; and many more! He has found that having a large repertoire of common phrases helps students to express themselves in ways that are emotionally and situationally appropriate, and makes them feel like real speakers of the language they are learning. Grant recommends that you begin the year with the green set, then introduce a new set every two months. Each set contains four 12 x 18-inch pieces, with four rejoinders on each piece (16 per set), and an 8 x 11-inch sheet that lists the expressions and their English translations.
